What Is the Most Common Body Type in India?
The pear silhouette — hips wider than shoulders — is the most commonly reported body type among Indian women, followed by apple (fuller midsection) and rectangle. But knowing the most common type does not tell you your type. Body proportions are individual and can be accurately determined only by measurement.
What Body Type Distribution Looks Like for Indian Women
South Asian women tend to carry more fat in the gluteal-femoral region (hips and thighs) compared to European women at equivalent body composition levels — a pattern documented in anthropometric research. This produces a population-level tendency toward the pear silhouette (hips wider than shoulders), though significant individual variation exists.
After the pear, the apple silhouette (fuller midsection, similar or narrower hips) is the second most common — particularly among women over 35, where age-related fat redistribution moves weight from hips toward the midsection. The rectangle (similar shoulder and hip measurements, less waist definition) is the third most common pattern.
Why Does Your Body Type Matter More Than the Average?
Knowing the most common Indian body type does not help you dress better — knowing your specific type does. Two women with the same overall dress size can have completely different body type proportions. One may be a pear (needing upper body visual interest and quieter lower body); the other may be an apple (needing A-line silhouettes and vertical lines through the midsection).
Geometric Silhouette Profiling™ measures 7 proportions to determine the exact silhouette type — not an assumption based on weight, height, or dress size.
How to Identify Your Specific Body Type
The simplest at-home method: take three measurements — shoulder width (across the back, shoulder point to shoulder point), hip circumference (at the fullest point), and waist circumference (at the natural waist).
- Hips wider than shoulders by 5%+ and waist defined: Pear
- Waist measurement 30%+ larger than hips: Apple
- Shoulders and hips within 5%, waist minimal definition: Rectangle
- Shoulders and hips within 5%, waist defined (25%+ difference from hips): Hourglass
- Shoulders wider than hips by 5%+: Inverted triangle
